About CalGEM California Oil & Gas Wells
California oil, gas, and injection wells read from the state Geologic Energy Management Division tracking system, anchored to a parcel rather than to an operator. It returns what sits within a radius of a site, how much of that is idle or orphaned, whether the point falls inside a mapped field or storage boundary, and whether construction there triggers the state well review that a city or county can require before it issues a building permit. Distances are measured from the coordinate given, not from a parcel boundary, so a large tract can reach wells the point does not. Production and injection volumes, the permit pipeline, stimulation history, and statewide operator rollups are deliberately out of scope. This is a screening signal for due diligence, never a state determination.
⚠ CalGEM well locations are permit-time surface locations (GISSource is frequently "Notice of Intent to Drill"), not as-drilled surveys, and a directionally drilled well's bottomhole is elsewhere. This connector answers "how many wells are within N meters of this point", never "is there a well on this parcel".
